Chichen Itza<\/strong><\/p>\n

we slipped through a chain-link fence<\/p>\n

as the bus sped off up a tunnel of night<\/p>\n

one floodlight spliced the dark<\/p>\n

a dog barked sharp<\/p>\n

there was no going back<\/p>\n

we crossed into woods beyond<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

startled awake, or was it a dream<\/p>\n

tap tapping rain, tropical sweat<\/p>\n

hunted prey on the ground<\/p>\n

the dog, peering down<\/p>\n

the dog,<\/p>\n

the dog.<\/p>\n

no questions asked<\/p>\n

leading us astray<\/p>\n

over damp silent grass<\/p>\n

on invisible string we followed the dog<\/p>\n

to a looming ladder of stone<\/p>\n

into a void of sky<\/p>\n

at the top the dog disappeared<\/p>\n

we were held captive<\/p>\n

ravished<\/p>\n

speechless<\/p>\n

spreadeagled before dawn<\/p>\n

until dark drained away like blood dried cold<\/p>\n

a symphonic mist rose<\/p>\n

to purify the day<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

hours later, concealed in the trees<\/p>\n

we woke again<\/p>\n

emerging as tourists,<\/p>\n

demigods in disguise<\/p>\n
